E-Cigarette Watch: Analyzing Statistics, Trends and Future Predictions

e cigarette statistics

As cultural attitudes toward smoking and health concerns continue to evolve, electronic cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular in many countries. Particularly favored among young people in the United States, which leads the global market growth for electronic cigarettes.

While electronic cigarettes are not without health risks, they are viewed as a smoking cessation tool in some countries like Sweden and the United Kingdom, aimed at reducing the harm caused by tobacco use. Electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco, but most contain nicotine, providing a tobacco-free alternative for users who require nicotine.

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States suggests that as long as adult smokers completely switch from regular cigarettes to electronic cigarettes, “they could benefit as long as they are not pregnant.”

Additionally, the National Health Service in the United Kingdom states that electronic cigarettes are “much less harmful than smoking,” but of course, they do not encourage their use by high school students or those under 18.

We’ve compiled 3 key electronic cigarette statistics to show you how electronic cigarette usage is increasingly gaining popularity nationally and globally.

Key Takeaways

  1. The United States ranks as the second most popular country for electronic cigarettes, with usage increasing from 11% to 15% since 2020 (source) Electronic Cigarette Statistics

According to a survey by Statista Consumer Insights across selected countries, 15% of adults in the United States use electronic cigarettes occasionally or more frequently, tied with Switzerland for second place. However, Indonesia appears to be the most popular country for electronic cigarette use, with approximately a quarter of respondents stating they use e-cigarettes or vaporizers.

The study surveyed between 1,000 and 9,500 adults aged 18-64 in each country.

Other top-ranking countries include the United Kingdom and Canada, tied at 13%; Italy and France tied at 9%; Germany at 7%; Brazil at 6%; Morocco at 2%.

A study on electronic cigarettes in the United States found that 11% of adults aged 18-24 (i.e., Generation Z) use electronic cigarette pens “every day” or “some days.” The third option in the survey was “not at all.”

Among young people in this age group, electronic cigarettes are more popular among males than females, with 11.6% of males using electronic cigarettes at least some days compared to only 10.3% of females.

The second most popular age group is 25-44, with 6.5% of respondents occasionally using electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes are also more popular among males in this age group, with a significantly larger gap—7.9% of males use electronic cigarettes compared to only 5.1% of females.

Meanwhile, only 2% of Americans aged 45 and older use electronic cigarettes. Interestingly, this is the only age group where vaping is more common among females—even if only slightly. The survey found that among females aged 45 and older, 2% use electronic cigarette pens at least some days, while 1.9% of males engage in the same behavior.
